What Comedic Screenwriters Should and Better Not Do
At a Glance
Brad's book What Are You Laughing At? How to Write Funny Screenplays, Stories and More came from his UCLA Extension course on Humor Writing. It is the only humor book to compare and contrast principles of writing humorous scripts and prose. The book was praised by the likes of Larry Gelbart (Tootsie, M*A*S*H), Penn of Penn and Teller and Tom Robbins (Even Cowgirls Get the Blues).
Now, Brad has customized his expertise for comedic screenwriters, utilizing book topics like:
- Generating Ideas
- the Character Template
- and his ground-breaking 11 Modes of Comedic Dialogue
There will be analysis of comedy film scenes covering a wide range of time and styles. And there will also be fun, free-wheeling flash writing exercises, that help the screenwriter break through blocks and enjoy the process of writing even more.
Other areas of discussion will include:
- Rhythm and Sound of Words
- How Far to Take Black or Dark Comedy
- Irony and Subtext
- The Nature of Comedic Structure
The writing exercises will include one communal unit, the Physical, Social and Intellectual aspects of the Character Template, and the other exercises will be written individually by the students. While no one will be forced to read aloud at gunpoint, all students will have the opportunity to volunteer to read their exercises, with sensitive, positive feedback from the instructor, who is as protective as a mother hen.
The handout that Brad has prepared for this class will not only summarize exercises and principles but also include a hand-picked list of websites of interest to the writer of comedic TV, film and New Media. Furthermore, there will be included very instructional and inspirational quotes about humor and a published essay on the nature of being a writer.
