"Unlocking the secrets of story awakens the power of story within you. Work with that power and you can steal fire from the gods. Master that power and you can create stories that will live forever." James Bonnet, Stealing Fire from the Gods: The Complete Guide to Story for Writers and Filmmakers
This intensive state-of-the-art story workshop and private sessions with James Bonnet in Santa Monica is modeled on the popular and successful workshop retreats in Nans Sous Sainte Anne, France. Considered by many top professionals to be the leading authority and guide to all things related to story and storymaking, and the author of Stealing Fire from the Gods, Bonnet will take you beyond Classical Story Structure, Three Acts, and The Hero’s Journey to a more complete understanding of the story principles you will need to create your own significant and successful novels or story films.
As we begin our journey together, we will work out and fine tune your story as we take an in-depth look at the essential elements of a story – the elements without which there would be no story; and the hidden story structures all great stories have in common. These hidden structures are intimately linked to the source of your creativity and are extremely powerful, and are the reason some great stories defy time and remain active and relevant for thousands of years and why others become classics, best-selling novels, or top grossing films.
Then as we continue our journey together and develop your characters, you will experience how to take them to the quintessential and make them not only memorable but symbolic and truly charismatic.
Once you work out the whole story, you will discover the narrative structure, and experience why there are an infinite number of ways to tell your story and why there is such great power in the purity of the subject. You will also understand why, so often, at the end of a great story, everything is at stake, time is running out, the odds are overwhelming, and the chances of success are almost nil. And why this is the great metaphor of our time – and why, come what may, you and your characters must persevere, confront and overcome all obstacles until you finally succeed.
On select evenings we will gather together to discuss an important film or book over wine and dinner.
A copy of the second edition of Stealing Fire from the Gods: The Complete Guide to Story for Writers and Filmmakers, will be sent to you upon registering for the workshop.
Space is limited, so don’t delay in signing up for this special opportunity.

“James Bonnet's Storymaking Retreat in France introduced me to an approach that I have used in everything I have written since. As our group bonded and met again in Santa Monica, James' process continued to become the natural way I write. As always, so many new ways of thinking and creating stories emerged, and this made me realize the incredible richness of James' ongoing mentorship." Erin Byrne is an award winning writer, most recently for 2012 Travelers' Tales Grand Prize Silver Solas Award for Spirals, Memoir of a Celtic Soul
“Employing psychological theory and his own hard-won insights, James Bonnet demystifies the magic of creative storytelling. Stealing Fire from the Gods is intelligent and fascinating.” Robert Crais, New York Times Best-Selling Novelist
