Freaks and Geeks: The Complete Script Volume 2 (Episodes 10-18)

Created by Paul Feig and executive produced by Judd Apatow (The Larry Sanders Show), Freaks and Geeks followed the Weir siblings--former math whiz Lindsay (Linda Cardellini of the Scooby-Doo feature films and ER) and her younger brother Sam (John Francis Daley)--as they navigated the perils and pleasures of a Michigan high school circa 1980. Lauded for its brutal honesty and very human character, Freaks and Geeks combined smart dialogue and winning performances, and its plotlines rarely offered pat solutions to the characters' conflicts.

These two volumes bring together the complete shooting scripts from all eighteen episodes of the critically acclaimed and fanatically followed TV series Freaks and Geeks (NBC, 1999-2000), including the Emmy®-nominated first and last episodes. FREAKS AND GEEKS: THE COMPLETE SCRIPTS is a wonderful in-depth look at the beloved TV show and the people behind it, for devoted fans and newcomers alike.

Show creator Paul Feig sets the tone for the books in his earnest and tongue-in-cheek introduction to Volume One. He describes the pride he takes in his creation and its “very cool following,” while making light of the show’s early cancellation (“Oh, my poor self-esteem,” he moans). Executive Producer Judd Apatow similarly prepares the reader for Freaks and Geeks’ off-the-wall humor in his introduction to Volume Two, in which he seems to talk about everything but the show. While he struggles to “fill a few pages with original material,” he demonstrates his ability to make a series of seemingly unconnected vignettes from his life into a revealing and entertaining look at the man who helmed a show that… turned vignettes about real life into revealing entertainment.

In addition to revisiting, or experiencing for the first time, the complete episodes of the series, readers can peruse fascinating behind-the-scenes memos, notes, ideas from brainstorming sessions and photos in the Scrapbooks that end each volume, with plotlines that never made it into a script, letters from the network asking them to tone down phrases like “on dope” and “crap your pants,” and excerpts from the Freaks and Geeks series bible.
