Writing Loglines that Sell
by Jonathan Treisman
Have you ever been stuck listening to a friend tell you a joke that seems to go on without ever reaching the punch line? Your mind starts wandering and you stop paying attention as the joke painfully loses its momentum.
Pitching your ideas effectively, whether from a script, novel or even your own mind, does not come naturally for most of us. But with a little practice, it can. Once you learn what a "High Concept Idea" is and how to create exciting story "Loglines" for your work.
Why do Writers Need to Learn How to Pitch?
In Hollywood, every movie starts out in the form of underlying material, such as a novel, a screenplay, a comic book or even a great idea. The next step is to convey your idea clearly and succinctly to those who are in a position to buy it. This is an essential tool for any writer working in Hollywood today.
We all know that Hollywood is not a meritocracy where only the best scripts, books or ideas get made into films. You have to learn how to pitch effectively to get your projects purchased in this very competitive marketplace.
What Hollywood Is Looking For?
Let's look at the types of films that the major Studios are buying these days.
Beyond some of the wonderful independent films that are being made within and outside of the Studio system, Hollywood primarily wants to acquire what they call, "High Concept Ideas". In layman's terms, we're talking about stories that put butts in the seats on a Saturday night.

SPECIAL FEATURE
Troubled 14-Year Old Makes Feature Film
by Matthew Irving
The Story Behind Purgatory House – or – How a Troubled
14-year-old Girl Managed to Write and Star in a Feature Without
Being Related to a Studio Mogul
"To me, the great hope is that now, with ... video recorders and stuff coming out, that some people - the people who normally don’t get to make movies - will be making them. And one day, suddenly, some little girl from Ohio will ... make a beautiful movie ... and for once the so-called professionalism about movies will be destroyed forever and it will really become an art form."
--Francis Ford Coppola
Celeste Davis isn’t from Ohio, but she does represent the ideal expressed by Francis Coppola’s prophetic words, which were spoken at the dawn of a digital era. In the past, the art of making movies was primarily reserved for those with money or power, but with the recent revolution in digital technologies, filmmaking has finally become an accessible medium of expression for anyone with a vision.
Celeste was a troubled 14-year-old living in Van Nuys, California when she completed the screenplay for Purgatory House. For years, she had been struggling with academics and all of her personal relationships. She was trying hard to avoid drugs and alcohol, though these temptations were all around her. Writing became Celeste’s means of escape. She was cleaning her messy bedroom when she had the instigating thought that would lead to Purgatory House: what if a person killed herself in order to escape everything she hated about being alive, only to find that she would remain forever trapped with all the same issues she had when she was alive, but without the chance to grow or change? Armed with this kernel of an idea, Celeste began to flesh out scenes and develop a coherent storyline. -- Continue Reading This Article >>

Winner of Hauge Workshop Checks In
We hope you’ll enjoy this first-person account by Diana Welsch of Austin, Texas who won free admission to Michael Hauge’s Screenwriting for Hollywood seminar.
I attended Michael Hauge's two-day seminar in Portland, Oregon recently. Screenwriting for Hollywood: from Concept to Sale delivered on its promise.
Hauge, a script consultant, screenwriter, author and motivational speaker taught this great class with no irrelevant scenes, increasing conflict, an accelerated pace and emotional peaks and valleys. I left enthusiastic, motivated and emotionally charged and days later, when I wasn't any of those things, I still had my secret bag full of tools and ideas which are the real gifts from great teachers.
I left with a six-stage plot structure, a story outline to help me formulate ideas, a submission checklist and a list to review every week to remind me of things to do as a serious screenwriter-in-the-making. Things like:
